How pdftomd collects, uses, and protects your data — including how uploaded PDFs are handled.

Introduction

pdftomd ("we", "our") converts PDF documents to Markdown. We respect your privacy and are committed to protecting your personal data. This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and — most importantly — what happens to the files you upload.

How We Handle Your PDFs

This is the part most users care about, so it comes first:

  1. Uploaded PDFs are used only to perform your conversion. They are never shared, published, or used for any other purpose.
  2. Conversion results are saved to your history, so you can re-copy or re-download them later.
  3. We do not read, analyze, or train on your documents. Conversion is fully automated.
  4. Scanned/image-only PDFs are the one exception to in-house processing: they require OCR, which we perform through a third-party OCR service (PaddleOCR by Baidu AI Studio). For those files only, the document is transmitted to that service for text recognition and handled under its terms. Digital PDFs with a text layer never leave our infrastructure.

Information We Collect

  1. Account Information — Your name, email address, and password hash (or OAuth identity) when you create an account.
  2. Conversion Records — Filename, page count, timestamp, and the resulting Markdown of each conversion.
  3. Usage Data — Daily page-quota consumption and credit balance, used to enforce plan limits.
  4. Payment Information — Billing is handled by third-party payment processors (e.g. Stripe). We never store full card numbers.
  5. Cookies — Session cookies to keep you signed in and remember preferences (e.g. language).

How We Use Your Information

  • Provide the conversion service and enforce plan quotas.
  • Process subscription payments and send related confirmations.
  • Send technical notices, security alerts, and support responses.
  • Detect, prevent, and address fraud and abuse.

We do not sell your personal data to third parties.

Data Retention

  • Conversion history (including Markdown results) is retained while your account is active.
  • If you delete your account, your conversion history and personal data are deleted.

Data Security

We use industry-standard encryption in transit (HTTPS) and at rest. Access to production data is restricted and audited.

Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data. Contact us to exercise these rights.
